ANNUAL AWARDS
Career Performance Grant In Memory of Verna Ross Orndorff ($5,000)
An annual grant of $5,000 will be awarded to a member of Sigma Alpha Iota for the purpose of advancing her career in performance. The program, open to singers and instrumentalists, will be on a three-year rotation:
- Strings, Woodwinds and Brass - 2008
- Piano, Harpsichord, Organ and Percussion - 2009
- Voice - 2010
Vocalists may be no older than 35, Instrumentalists no older than 32, as of the application deadline date of March 15, 2008.
To be eligible for this award, an applicant must have an undergraduate degree as of application deadline; be preparing for a concert career and demonstrate career potential; must have had considerable performing experience outside the academic environment; and must not be under professional management. Grant funds must be used for advanced study, coaching, or other purposes directly related to the development of a professional performing career.
Each application must be accompanied by a 30-minute CD. The winner will be selected by a professional judging panel from among all the applications postmarked by the deadline date of March 15 each year. Application Form

At the National Convention of Sigma Alpha Iota held in Dearborn, Michigan, July 31-August 4, 2003, a scholarship of $2,000 was announced to honor former SAI National Executive Secretary, Dorothy Cooke Whinery. This scholarship is offered to a member of SAI who is enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in the field of Music Business or Music Technology. The degree emphasis may also include Music Marketing, Music Business Administration, Entertainment Industry, Commercial Music, Music Management, Recording Industry or other related fields. A scholarship of $1,500 will be awarded to a member of Sigma Alpha Iota who has completed an undergraduate degree in Music Education and has been accepted into and/or continuing in an accredited graduate program leading to a masters or doctoral degree in music education. The alumnae member must be in good standing with the fraternity and have paid National Dues. It is preferred that the candidate has had at least one year of teaching experience in a private or public school. KENNEDY CENTER INTERSHIP ($2,400)
Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of a three-month Internship for a member of Sigma Alpha Iota at The Institute for Arts Management at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC during the summer months.
Eligibility
Applicants for this SAI Philanthropies, Inc. –sponsored Internship must be initiated members of Sigma Alpha Iota in good financial standing with the Fraternity. They may be juniors, seniors, graduate students, or graduates out of school for no more than two years.
Details of the Internship
The decision on all internship applications is solely the responsibility of The Institute for Arts Management at the Kennedy Center. Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. will not participate in any way in the application review and selection process.
The Internship will be for a three-month period during the summer of 2008.
Internship assignments are from 37.5-40 hours a week. Interns are placed in administrative positions dealing with the management, educational, presentational, promotional, or technical aspects of the Kennedy Center’s operations, depending on the interests and qualifications of the individual Intern. Each Intern is responsible for developing personal goals for the Internship.
College credit may be available, depending on the policies of the Intern’s university. Applicants should check with the placement offices of their institutions.
Interns may attend any Kennedy Center performances on a space-available basis. In addition to their assigned duties, Interns will participate in weekly Executive Seminar sessions in which they will have an opportunity to learn about all the departments of the Center.

Stipend
The Intern will receive, through The Institute for Arts Management at the Kennedy Center, a stipend of $225 per week to help defray living costs in Washington. It will be the Intern’s responsibility to provide her own transportation to and from Washington, and her housing and meals during the period of the Internship (the Kennedy Center will assist Interns in finding reasonably-priced housing). There will be no additional financial support from Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc.

Impact Project Grants
For a College Chapter and their Music Department
Since 1985, SAI Philanthropies, Inc. has offered matching grants to college and university music departments in cooperation with the resident Sigma Alpha Iota chapter or a group of chapters. The following conditions apply:
- Impact Project Grants are awarded in support of major projects in music which will have impact beyond the confines of the campus.
- The yearly allocation of $15,000 will fund several Impact Grant projects. In no instance will the Impact Grant be awarded for more than half the total cost of the project.
- Matching resources provided by the school may be in money and/or in-kind contributions.
- Eligibility is limited to college and university music departments with SAI college chapters.
- Grants may not be used for scholarships or tuition.
- SAI Involvement may be a college chapter, a college/alumnae chapter team, or a group of chapters where that is geographically feasible.
Announcement and application materials are mailed to music administrators and SAI chapters in the fall. Applications must be postmarked no later than April 15.

For Alumnae and College Chapters
General Chapter Outreach Grants may be awarded to chapters under the following conditions:
- The grant must be in support of an outreach project developed and carried out by the chapter for the musical enrichment of the campus or community beyond the membership of SAI.
- The grant will be for a maximum of $500, and will in no case be for more than half the total cost of the project.
- No more than one grant will be awarded to a chapter for a particular project.
- The grant may not be used for scholarships or tuition.
Examples of projects for which General Chapter Outreach Grants have been awarded:
- Workshop on vocal techniques for children's choirs
- 2-day residency by a woman composer
- Music materials for an Appalachian settlement school.

Professional Development/Education Grant
Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. proudly announces the availability of grants in amounts up to $500 to encourage music-related continuing education and professional development among alumnae and affiliated patroness members of Sigma Alpha Iota.
A member may receive one grant per triennium to support an educational and professional development activity related to her current employment in the field of music.
SAI Philanthropies, Inc. requires only that the recipient be in good standing, be current with national dues, and share the knowledge she gains from the experience with other SAIs. This is to be done within one year of the grant.
For example:
Give a presentation at a Province Day or a chapter meeting
Write a short article or summary of the event for Pan Pipes or a province/chapter newsletter or
Present an educational workshop at a triennial convention
Examples of activities that may be funded under this grant program include, but are not limited to, the following:
Tuition for a college music course
Registration fee for a music education workshop
Mileage or airfare to attend a leadership training conference

Inter-American Music Awards
Project Description
A triennial composition competition established in 1948, the Inter-American Music Awards are open to composers residing in North, Central and South America, with no age limit.
Two major American composers are invited to judge each IAMA competition. In addition to their judging responsibilities, the composer-judges each write a work to be published in the Sigma Alpha Iota IAMA series. Current or former students of either of the announced judges are ineligible to apply.

Each triennium, Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. specifies the particular combination of instruments and/or voices for which entries must be written, and the length of the work. Recent competitions have called for:
- Brass quintet, no longer than ten (10) minutes in duration, suitable for advanced college performance
- an instrumental work for no more than 4 performers, with or without piano, the winning composition being for two pianos; and
an instrumental work for solo string instrument (violin, viola, or cello), the winning composition being for violin.

Application Procedures
The IAMA competition brochure and application is mailed out and posted online in the middle year of the triennium. The judging takes place in the summer preceding the Convention year. The winner is announced at Convention, and the premieres of the winning work, and of the compositions donated by the composer-judges, take place during the Convention.
The application may be filled out online, printed out, and submitted, or a blank application can be printed out and filled in by hand. When printing the forms, make sure you select "Fit To Paper" in your print window.
Manuscripts submitted for entry must be postmarked no later than May 1, 2008.

Project Seed Grants for Alumnae Chapters
Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. is offering four grants annually of up to $2500 each to alumnae chapters to initiate work on a major project in music that is expected to continue beyond the period of the initial grant (i.e., one year) and become self-sustaining. Grant funds may not be used for scholarships or tuition. The funded project must be executed as proposed.
- The applying SAI chapter must be in “good financial standing” with the fraternity
- Selection will be made on the following basis:
- Potential impact of the project beyond the local level
- Evidence of potential sustainability of the project in the long term
- Expressed commitment of the chapter in terms of monetary and “people” resources
- Quality of overall proposal in terms of clarity, evidence of good planning, and project ideas and goals
- Reasonableness/justification of the proposed budget
The application packet plus four (4) copies are to be sent to SAI National Headquarters.
