International Jazz Saxophone Competition
Deadline: August 15, 2008
The Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition is open to all saxophonists who plan to pursue jazz performance as a career. Eligibility is exclusive to saxophonists who are 30 years of age and under as of October 26, 2008, and have never recorded as a leader on a major label or widely distributed independent label. Requirements: application fee $35; completed application form; current resumé of musical experience with discography, an audio submission (CD or mp3), and photo. Each applicant will be notified of the results from the preliminary judging by September 22, 2008. Hotel accommodations and air transportation from within the United States will be provided for competitors who reside outside the greater Los Angeles, CA area. Semifinals October 25; Finals October 26. 2008, in Los Angeles, California. First Place $20,000; Second $10,000; Third $5,000; additional finalists $1,000 each.

Athena Festival
“Women, Music and the 20th Century” is the theme of the 6th Athena Festival is to be held at Murray (KY) State University March 10-13, 2009. Several opportunities exist:
• Unpublished choral composition by woman composer, a capella, SATB divisi up to 8 parts, suitable for collegiate undergraduate choir, 5-10 minutes. Offers $1000 prize and $500 travel allowance with residency for the Festival. Premiere and recording.
• Unpublished chamber music composition by a woman composer, 3 - 6 instruments taken from voice (sop, mezzo, tenor, bass/baritone), flute, clarinet, oboe/bassoon/alto sax, trumpet, percussion, piano, violin. 10 - 20 minutes. Prize of $1500 and $500 travel allowance with residency for the Festival. Premiere and recording.
Postmark deadline for composition contests is August 1, 2008.
• Papers and lecture recitals: The proposed paper or lecture recital topic should relate to women and music. The Athena Festival encourages not only established scholars and performers, but also students with works-in-progress, to submit abstracts for consideration. Guidelines can be found on the Athena Festival website. Formal acceptance of an invitation to present during the festival, including a $100 registration fee, must be received by January 15, 2009. Expense of travel and housing is responsibility of the presenter.

The Nancy Van de Vate International Composition Prize for Opera
Postmark deadline September 1, 2008
The 2008 prize, named for the SAI Honorary Member, is awarded by the American music publishers, Vienna Masterworks (BMI) and Vienna Master Composers (ASCAP), and is open to women composers of any age or nationality. The prize is $1,000 and publication (if desired) of the winning work. The award is for any kind of opera or music theater piece of more than fifteen minutes’ duration. Shorter works may be submitted if they are part of a set of at least fifteen minutes’ duration. Works submitted must be either unpublished or self-published and include a processing fee of $15 for each submission.
