Biography
Julie Mandel, composer of musical theater and chamber music, studied 12-tone composition with Ernst Krenek. She is the recipient of several awards from Meet The Composer and ASCAP and is currently Treasurer of the Long Island Composers Forum, and The Aviva Players, a group dedicated to presenting the work of women composers.

PREMIERES
Solitude in the City for double bass and piano was introduced October 22, 2008, by Allan Von Schenkel and Kristen Williams, Fordham University, NY; the performers presented it again December 2, Baryshnikov Arts Center, New York, NY; March 21, 2009, University of Hartford, CT; and May 18, Christ and St. Stephen’s Church, New York, NY. The Stony Brook String Quartet premiered String Quartet No. 6, November 7, North Shore Library, Shoreham, NY; the group performed the work again December 7, at the Cutchogue-New Suffolk (NY) Free Library, Cutchogue. Two songs, I Shall Never Forget and A Portrait of Childhood, were presented March 9, 2009, by Aglaia Ho, voice and piano at the Freeport Library.
PERFORMANCES
The Phoenix Quartet presented four songs November 9, That Many Faceted Thing, Chamber Music, Love is a Two-Part Invention, and Two Points of View, Park Avenue United Methodist Church Sanctuary, New York, NY. Soprano Mary Lou Shriber and Carol Sudhalter’s Astoria Jazz Band performed the songs Song Without Words, That Many Faceted Thing, Where Have You Gone, and Breakfast Alone, November 22 at the Steinway Reformed Church, Astoria, Long Island, NY; the instrumental Whipped Cream was performed on the same concert.

PREMIERES
Pianist Aglaia Ho introduced Floating Clouds March 30, 2008, at the Freeport (NY) Library. The Conservatory Chamber Choir of Brooklyn College, conducted by Jonathan Babcock, presented The Three Oddest Words April 17 at Queens College, NY. The three-movement work Central Park was first heard in a September 21 performance by clarinetist Naomi Drucker, violist Lois Martin, and pianist Blanche Abram, American Chamber Ensemble concert, Hofstra University, Long Island, NY.
PERFORMANCES
Violinist Herb Feldman, cellist George Dewar, and pianist Howard Meltzer presented The Wedding Trio February 3, 2008, at Great Neck (NY) House. The Pious Cat was performed by soprano Jerry Casey, clarinetist Marilyn Boyd, pianist Angela Sutton, and narrator Sarah Wurdlow, April 27, Central Presyterian Church, Columbus, OH. Six works were presented May 18 by soprano Kelsey Jilette and Carol Sudhalter’s Astoria Jazz Band at the Steinway Reformed Church in Astoria, NY: 2 in 5/4, Song Without Words, That Many Faceted Thing, Where Have You Gone, Whipped Cream, and Breakfast Alone.
